No story, just news about the book...

Hi Everyone--
I wanted to let you know that my book will be available BY TUESDAY on Amazon.  I have received the edit and will take care of that today.  I'm waiting for the forward and then it's a go.

The title will be "El cochino blanco y otros cuentos".  I know that some have questioned the title, but after much thought, I decided to leave it.  This is a true story, and I know that my husband would have called it "el cochino".  So I'm leaving it in honor of his memory.

You have asked me about who the book is designed for.  Originally, I thought that as an SSR book, it should be for Spanish 3.  Now, however, I think that I'm revising that a little.  If you want to use this as an assisted reading book (maybe to supplement your own stories), it would be appropriate for Spanish 2.  For true SSR, you should go with 3.

In this printing, I am trying to keep to the SSR idea and so I'm not giving vocabulary suggestions.  However, I do have the vocabulary listed and will be happy to provide it through the email given in the book.

I will post again when the book publishes.

If you like it, please post a favorable review.  Our reviews are what  brings others to buy the books.

Thanks for supporting this venture!  It was your interest that made me start in the first place.  I will be publishing others soon, starting with a reader for 1st year.

Mike had a pretty and nice girlfriend named Minnie.  The two enjoyed themselves by playing videogames and tennis, by going to many concerts, and by doing other things together.  Unfortunately, there was a problem.  The girl had a dog named Fifi.  She was a small poodle, and Minnie always took her with her.  She never stopped talking about her dog.  Mike didn't like dogs--especially poodle dogs.

One day, Mike decided that enough was enough.  He didn't want to hear any more about that stupid poodle.  When Minnie arrived at his house he told her, "I don't want to talk about your dog, Minnie.  Can we talk about something else?"
"Yes, of course," she said to him.  "What do you want to talk about"

¿Cuándo vas a llevarlo?—
--¡Ay, tonto!  No es para mi, es para…oh.  No importa.—
--¿Qué dices, Princesa?—
--Es un vestido para Fifi.  Lo siento.

Mike knew that Minnie liked clothes.  "We can talk about clothes."
"Oh, I bought a really pretty dress yesterday.  It's blue and white and has diamonds, too.
"Oh, how pretty!  When will you wear it?"
"Oh, silly!  It's not for me, it's for--oh.  Never mind."
"What are you saying, Princess?"
"It's a dress for Fifi.  I'm sorry."

The couple tried to talk, but every subject ended with something about Fifi.  When Minnie left, Mike started to think:  What would be better--dropping Minnie or being really bored listening to story about her dog? Mike decided to stay with Minnie, and after a while, they got married.  Now Mike and Minnie have two children, and they never stop talking about the kids.  Everyone is happy, including Fifi.  She can be a dog now, nothing more, and she likes it a lot.

1st year story trata de, come mientras habla, llega

--¡Oh no!

Pidió (he ordered) 1.000.000 de computadores inmediatamente.  Tommy estaba muy feliz.

New Spanish 1 story--SSR Book in proofing stage

My SSR book is coming along, and it is currently being proofed by 2 native speakers.  I'm hoping for a late Jan/early Feb startup date.

There were two sisters that were Salpointe students.  One was named Silvia and the other was named Roberta.  They liked the school, although they didn't like the uniforms.

One day, Roberta was putting on her clothes when she remember that she didn't have money for lunch.  She put on her black shirt and her pants.  Then she ran to her mom to ask her for money.

When she returned, Roberta saw that her sister also had put on a black shirt.  Roberta entered the bedroom and took off her shirt.  She put it in her closet and took out a white shirt.  When she entered the kitchen to eat breakfast, Mom told her that her sister had already left with her friends to school.  Roberta ate and then left, too.

At school, Roberta didn't see Silvia in the morning, but while she was eating lunch, Silvia arrived.  She had also put on a white shirt!  Silvia gave a banana to her sister.  Roberta took the banana and asked her, "Why did you take off your black shirt?"
Silvia explained to her, "When I saw that you put on a black shirt, I didn't want to have the same shirt as you, so I took the white one out of my closet and put it on.
Roberta told her, "And now we have the same shirt anyway!  What a coincidence!

Yes, said her sister.  "Roberta, we have to talk before we put on our clothes, right?"
Now the sisters always talk to each other before putting on their clothes.  There are no more problems.

SSR book Update

Hi Everyone!

Just a note to let you know that my SSR book is in the process of being published.  Right now it's going to be in print, but the next step is Kindle.  I will be selling the print version for $7.99.  I haven't seen what Kindle says yet (I have to finish the print process first), but I will let you know.

I think that the stories can be read in 2nd year with assistance and independently in the 2nd semester of 2nd year or beginning of 3rd.

I will make a 1st year book as well, but it won't go to print until later in the year.  I have to write them before I can print them :)!

Question:  would you like to see an English version of this for sale?

Also, if you find that leaving comments on the blog is too hard, please go to my website: megvillanueva.com.  I have a comments page on the site that is super easy to use.

Thanks!
Meg

Hansel and Gretel rewrite--guest post by Anouk Berends

I wanted to share this story that Anouk Berends made.  She took my story of Hansel and Gretel  http://meggiev777.blogspot.com/2013/10/a-retelling-of-hansel-and-gretel.html  and made it her own.  That's what my hope has been with this blog--that you use my stories and redesign them so they fit your needs!

Here's Anouk's story:

This is the story from Hansel and Gretel: I named them, Carlota y Pedro Había dos hermanos que se llamaban Carlota y Pedro. Queremos comer."
There were a brother and sister named CArlota and Pedro. Their parents had no money. They were very ppoor. One day, the father told them, "Let's go to the forest," The three went to the forest and after an hour, Carlota and Pedro wanted to eat. They told him, "Dad, we're hungry and cold. Please, can you make a fire? We want to eat."
The father told them, "Look, I have bread, but I don't have firewood. While I'm looking for firewood, you can eat a little of the bread. Then, when I come back, I want to eat a little of the bread, too. Then you won't eat it all.
"Okay, Dad, we won't eat it all."
“¿Has visto aquella casa alguna vez?”, dijo Pedro.
But two hours later, the dad still had not arrived. The brother and sister were sleepy and wanted to return home, and they went to look for their father.
Peter said, "Where's Dad? I don't like this situations."
"Me either. Look!" shouted Carlota. "Over there. There is a house."
"Have you seen that house before?" asked Pedro. They siblings had gone to the forest many times and had never seen that house.
Era una casa especial. La casa era de ¡puro chocolate! “No quiero volver a casa”, dijo Carlota.
It was a special house. The house was pure chocolate!
"I don't want to go home," said Carlota.
"Me either," said Pedro.
Pedro and Carlota were eating a little of the chocolate when suddenly they saw something. A person was talking on the phone. Pedro and Carlota were curious. Who was talking on the phone? It was a witch! And the witch wasn't talking on the phone, she was talking on a very small cell phone--a really tiny cell phone made of chocolate!
Estamos buscando a nuestro padre. Tenemos miedo.”
Pedro and Carlota had never seen a chocolate cell phone, and they had never seen such a small cell phone. The witch saw them and grabbed them. Pedro and Carlota said to her, "Please, Mrs. Witch, help us! We are looking for our father. We don't know where he is. We were hungry and so we ate all the chocolate. We don't want to go in your house. We're afraid.
Pedro y Carlota volvieron a casa. Y su padre, ¿dónde estaba? ¿Estaría en casa?
The witch said, "Abracadabra, the children are going to retreat to their house so they can eat!"
Pedro and Carlota returned home.
And their father, where was he? Was he at home?

Spanish 1 story for LICT chapter 4

Mark estaba emocionado.

Mark was excited.  He was going to his first Prom, and he had a date--the most beautiful girl in the whole school.  Her name was Jennifer.  mark wanted a very beautiful suit because he wanted to impress Jennifer.  Therefore, Mark went to Ralph Lauren to buy a really beautiful suit.

When Mark entered through the door, he saw many suits.  There were white suits, black suits, brown suits, blue suits--a whole lot of suits.  Mark didn't know which suit to buy, so he looked for a clerk.

There were many clerks in the store, but they were all helping the other kids.  But after a wile, Mark found a clerk that wasn't helping anyone.  Mark asked the clerk for help and the clerk helped him.

Mark wanted a beautiful suit, and the clerk told him that the most beautiful suit in the suit section was an orange and purple suit.  When he tried on the suit, Mark told him, "It isn't beautiful.  The suit is really ugly!"  The clerk told him, "You tell me that it's ugly, but it's because you're a boy.  The girls like it a lot.  He called to a (girl) clerk.  "Mariana!  Do you like the suit?"  Mariana told him, "Yes!  It's very beautiful!

Mark thought that the girl was very pretty, and he decided to buy the suit.  He returned to his house, put on the suit, and then went to his friend Jennifer's house.

(Get out of here)  Pobre Mark regresó a la casa.

When Mark entered through Jennifer's door, the girl almost threw up!  "Mark, the suit is horrible!  I'm not going to the prom with you.  Get out of here!  Poor Mark returned to his house.

At Ralph Lauren, the clerk siad, "Thanks very much!" to Mariana.  "The stupid boy did buy the really ugly suit.  You helped me a lot!"  The clerk gave $10 to the girl for her help.  What evil clerks!
